A Taste of Vincy Life

August 16, 2016

“I haven’t been everyone but it’s on my list!” One of our favourite quotations and one that truly embodies persons who share our same passion for travel and adventure!

During the Labour Day Long Weekend 2016 Road Trip TT hosted a Funcation to St. Vincent and the Grenadines joined by 20 fellow travel and adventure enthusiasts. We enjoyed 3 nights and 4 days of action packed excitement, adventure, exploring and sightseeing including 10 tours/outdoor activities and visits to 4 beaches on the island.

Most patrons on the trip met as strangers and many left as friends who to this day still keep in touch! Maybe it was the camaraderie built on the maxi rides to each site; or maybe it was our friendly and hospitable local guide Roleza; or maybe it was the magic of SVG, its easy going atmosphere and wonderful attractions.

After checking in to the lovely Mariners Hotel our Funcationers were ready for a taste of the vincy life. We were welcomed by the clear waters of Indian Bay after we digested one of the most enticing views on Fort Duvernette which held the same for Fort Charlotte and Fort Hamilton which we visited on other days. As customary on the first evening we have a meet and greet and this time it was over a tasty buffet dinner.

Over the next two days we explored every inch of the magnificent island of St. Vincent!

On the second day the camaraderie was no doubt a source of encouragement for all when we trekked through the Vermont Nature Trail. The trail cut through part of the southern interior of the island allowing us to bask in the wide variety of flora and fauna.  Our lunch stop at Wallilabou Bay and Restaurant which housed the props used for some of the openings scenes of Pirates of The Caribbean – The Black Pearl provided great photo opps for our budding movie stars.

As we traversed the leeward side of the island under the care of our most skilled driver, Vincy's lush green countryside, its continuous panoramic view of the blue sea and the sighting of the dormant Soufriere volcano quenched our thirst for a new experience. During the journey a few pit stops were made to not only stretch our legs but to top up the cooler. The drive to Dark View Waterfalls was certainly worth the reward of the cool bath under its towering cascading waters. Many of us had to conquer the fear of crossing a secure but swaying bamboo bridge in order to get to the falls, all part of the countryside adventure that day.

The day trip to the much smaller and popular Grenadine isle of Bequia was undoubtedly an unforgettable experience even though the weather was inclement at times. All Funcationers hopped aboard the inter-island ferry anxious to explore the isle. This was done on an open back jeep to the delight of many. Our jeep tour of the island exposed us to its white sand beaches and rich culture. We made a stop at the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary which at the end reminded us of our duty to protect the environment in which supports our very existence. We were able to view and interact with the many hawksbill turtles that were rescued and those that were waiting to be released into their natural habitat for the first time.

After ending each day with a soothing beach bath this group tireless Funcationers would head to their rooms refreshed to begin the evening pump. Making the most of the experience in the day as well as the night, some spent their time at the bar, others went out for dinner, while some made the best of the pool. As Roleza our local guide exclaimed “They had enjoy boy!”

On the last day we were treated to a true Vincy feast of local dishes and fruit juice after we visited Owia, the home of some of the indigenous people of St. Vincent. The volcanic rock formations just beyond the village’s shore provided pools of salt water for our eager bathers. The view of the ocean there was simply breathtaking!

With everyone packed and ready to head home to sweet Trinbago we recognised the true meaning of understanding one’s culture is to experience it. Road Trip TT invites you to join us for our next Destination Travel Trip! Quench your wanderlust, your passion for exploring new countries and experiencing new cultures!
